Engaging Millennials in Today’s Workforce

As each new generation enters themillenials workforce, current employees and bosses need to adapt to engage and retain employees. With an estimated 40 million Millennials now in the workforce, this group of job seekers is making a profound impact on companies. Elders often view Millennials as narcissistic, but they’re also more educated and diverse than previous generations. Now that Millennials represent the largest percentage of the U.S. workforce, it’s important to pay attention to how they’re changing the workplace.

 

In part one of this three-part series, we look at Millennials to learn what makes them tick and what that means for the risk and analytics solutions providers that will be hiring them.

 

The Workplace Culture — While the younger generation may enjoy having video games and ping pong tables at the office, these activities aren’t necessary. These individuals are drawn to an environment that’s appealing to them on a daily basis. They want to be heard and valued by staff and superiors, have the ability to pursue their own ideas and reap a variety of perks.

 

Collaboration is Key — Collaboration is important to Millennials. Many grew up playing team sports, completing group projects at school and participating in other collaborative endeavors. Thus, they bring a desire for collaboration to the workplace. It’s important for Millennials to be able to provide input and receive feedback on projects and other work. It’s even more important to them that they believe their personal ideas are heard and truly make a difference.

 

Don’t Overlook Technology  Millennials thrive in a digital world, including the workplace. According to numerous studies, they consider access to state-of-the-art technology when considering a job opportunity. Most Millennials use their own technology at work and feel that it boosts their productivity. To appeal to this generation, companies often incorporate technology into the benefits package and encourage work-related use of social media.

 

When employers gain an understanding of the newest members of the workforce, they will be better equipped to recruit, train, and retain them. Companies need to take these changing attitudes and mindsets into consideration and develop an appropriate environment to foster success.
